Audiovisual Objects Made of Grains and Particles
Workshop
Duration: 6 hours

My compositional process often starts with a real-time audiovisual objects that I treat as a core compositional material. I especially like to work with objects where sound comes from visuals such as generating sounds from movement or deformation of 3D geometry.
In this workshop we will create a complex audiovisual object where movement of individual particles will control parameters of individual grains within a granular sampler / synthesizer. Two examples can be seen below:

The aim of the workshop is to teach participants how to hack existing audio and video tools in order to exploit them in a creative audiovisual way. Therefore, participants will receive granular engines (audio) and particle systems (visuals) made in Max that are all freely available online. During the course we will first explain how they work and then we will modify them so we will be able to link the audio and visual in a very unique and creative way. Hence, we will create tools that generate complex and visuals driven audiovisual objects. Furthermore, we will interact with theses objects via mouse or touchpad but if you bring your favourite controller with you, we’ll do our best to integrate those as well!
